If you can’t describe what you are doing as a process, you don’t know what you are doing

Master Journal Article Writing

Academic Coach offers a specialised course on how to write and publish journal articles. This course is for anyone - at any level - who needs to publish regularly in good journals to sustain or advance their academic career. This course will take you through the process of crafting a journal article from start to finish. You will see the imagery of the pottery wheel on the course pages, because getting a piece of research into a publishable format - for a journal article - requires craft. This craft has probably never been taught to you, but just like throwing a pot on a wheel, there are predictable steps that we need to go through to create the finished piece - from raw clay to decorated vase. Whilst the odd creative flourish - particularly at the decoration (or polishing stage) is allowed - the steps of creation are both predictable, and required: otherwise the thing blows up in the kiln.

Learning an efficient and effective way to produce journal articles over and over will save you the pain and misery of publishing uncertainty.

This course will take you through the stages so you can learn a reliable, repeatable process from moving from raw clay, to finished piece, time after time, throughout your academic career. It is never too early or too late to perfect this craft.

In time, you will get better and better at the crafting. But the first step, is to know the rules of production, and this course will guide you through a process that you can rely on to deliver results time and again.

Course outcomes

This course will:

  • Provide you with a fool-proof template of how to execute publishing in the journal format

  • Teach you my Five Drafts to Finish model of writing

  • Give you proven processes and systems of drafting and writing

  • Show you the process - step by step - of writing from ideation to publication

  • Retrain how you do the preparatory work so that you become more efficient at writing, getting time back in your life for other things

  • Make explicit all the unspoken rules of academic journal publishing so that you don’t fall foul of them

  • Provide you with reliable templates on how you write the component parts of a journal article.

Ultimately, this course is here to show you that publishing is not magic, or talent: it is formulaic, repeatable, and entirely achievable with the right information.

This course is for you if:

  • You want to up-skill your writing to be faster and more efficient at producing professional text

  • You want writing to be predictable and executable at each stage, so you are not wondering when to start or stop component parts of the process - this removes anxiety and procrastination

  • You want dedicated training on the craft of writing so you can excel in your career

  • You need to publish in journals to maintain or advance your career

  • You want help and coaching on implementation of what you learn

Format of the course

Like other courses here at Academic Coach, this course comes as a mixture of coaching videos, text that provides information, guidance, and where appropriate, points for reflection, and downloadable resources.

This course is available all at once: there is no ‘drip feed’ of content. The course is informational and is not premised on a timed writing exercise, as you will see, I think those types of guides/ books /courses set people up to fail. My coaching is here to set you up for success.

I will coach, nudge and shuffle, and then catapult you through the various stages of creating and finishing a journal article.

This course is entirely asynchronous and you can download the link and begin anytime you like. Access is immediate, and is for 12 months.

Live coaching

In addition to all the course materials, you will have access to fortnightly live group coaching calls with me to get all your questions on writing a journal article answered. Sometimes, you need that little extra help to make it happen, and I am here to make sure you are successful.

The writing journal

To get the most from this course, I encourage you to maintain a writing journal that you dedicate to this course, and its materials and reflections, so that you can take notes and lessons as you find them. Engaging in this reflective exercise ensures you internalise the messages of the course and apply them to your own practice, rather than having content you consume and discard / forget over time.

This reflection and thinking about what you might do differently is a core element of the course, and you will be prompted throughout the course to set aside a few minutes to note down how the course relates to your experience and practice at each of the stages. What have you been doing before? What will you now do differently?

Timeframe

Ideally, you would work your way through this course over a couple of weeks - or even a couple of months alongside a journal article you are now in the process of writing, or alongside a piece you are writing from scratch - so that you have some time to reflect on the content and think about your own experience of journal article publishing. I know, however, some of you will simply sit down and ‘do it’ all at once because: you are an academic. That is fine, but do take time to do the reflective practice. What resonates particularly for you? Where are your common stumbling blocks and what can you take from the course that will guide you through publishing a journal article with a lot less pain and suffering?

Each course page consists of a video, some text and /or resources, and where appropriate, points of reflection for your journal. It should not take you more than 15 - 20 minutes per page to go through the course, although some pages ask you to do certain things that will take you longer. There are 32 pages of text and coaching videos, comprising 8 modules, with an average of 4 pages per module, amounting to about 10.5 hours tuition. That is a lot to digest all at once, so please think about pacing yourself.
