writing Sprints club

One of the core missions of Academic Coach is to bring people together to write. The Writing Sprint Club is for academic writers (PhD and faculty) who want to create guaranteed writing time every week to push their projects forward. Research on writing productivity (eg Boice, amongst many others) tells us that social writing - that is regular writing amongst others - results in more outputs. It is that simple. It has been measured time and again. It fuels positive emotions around writing and creates additional social benefits beyond the time spent writing. Writing clubs become organic engines of support outside of your department, your discipline and your country, and you are engaged in a common endeavour with people who truly understand. Paying a fee actually increases the effectiveness of social writing because it creates an appointment you feel you should keep. Having an outside facilitator again ensures you are more likely to turn up as opposed to in-house writing sessions.

How does the club work?

You block book six months worth of sessions - or an month by month subscription - to hold yourself accountable and to make sure you follow through. You turn up each week with what you need (I provide a guide to this with free coaching videos) and we meet up in our co-writing slots, organised to include most time zones to practice the art of the writing sprint. I will show up and facilitate these sessions, and I will write with you. Don’t know what a writing sprint is? I have a video here explaining it and why mastering this skill is key to being a happier writer.

You will be provided with €500 worth of coaching material upfront on signup through a private resources hub that I will drop free coaching into throughout the year, just for Club members. I know these things can sound a bit daunting, but this is a supportive and friendly environment open to academics and PhD students alike.

This service is for you if:

  • You want to get your writing done but have difficulty allocating time each week on a consistent basis

  • You are more likely to keep on with your writing project if you have a supportive group environment

  • You would like to dip your toe into coaching and experience what it is like to be supported in your writing career without big ticket commitments

  • You feel isolated and want to be part of another academic community

Where does this fit in our range of services?

Many clients who join the Writing Sprint Club like the ‘live’ element of interaction and sign up for other live events throughout the year using their discount code; some go onto take the Academic Writing Course which works on solidifying your writing habit; yet others stay here in the Writing Sprint Club enjoying the weekly interaction. You choose the level of support you want to engage with.

Testimonials

Participating in the Writing Sprint Club ensures that my research projects do not sit on a shelf collecting dust during teaching terms. Instead, I know that there will be at least two hours a week when I will make steady progress. Melanie’s expert coaching has also helped me make more concrete goals for each writing session. “Revise Intro” will instead become “Update the precis of chapter 1 in the chapter summary section of the intro.” I also have many post-it notes stuck to the edge of my computer full of words of wisdom from our sessions. For example, “The key to momentum is a mix of easy and hard.” Finally, I appreciate the support and friendly faces of the other participants; we celebrate one another’s successes and help keep one another on task. I’m so grateful for the club!

The writing sprints have been fantastic for making sure that I make time for my research! I find that it’s so easy for teaching and admin work to crowd into my schedule, but the writing sprints ensure that I devote quality time to my research. I love hearing Melanie’s feedback during the sprint and it’s also great knowing that at the same time other people are doing their work. Overall the sprints have been really helpful!

Writing Sprint Club has helped keep the wheels in motion on more than one of my projects, even during term time. It provides support, encouragement, mini-coaching, and a collegiate environment in which wins can be celebrated, and challenges and obstacles are discussed (with suggested solutions). Highly recommended!
